Business Gas for UK Businesses
For many businesses — from restaurant kitchens to heated offices — gas is one of the largest running costs. Like business electricity, business gas is agreed on individual contracts that are not covered by the household price cap.
Meridian helps UK businesses explore gas contracts from suppliers, understand the terms, and plan renewals so they are not left on rates they have not chosen.
Who can help my business find a business gas contract?
You can compare business gas contracts directly with suppliers or through a broker. Have a recent bill with your MPRN and annual usage ready, check your contract end date and notice period, and compare unit rates, standing charges and terms. Meridian acts as a broker for the gas suppliers we work with and explains the options before you decide.

What to compare on a business gas quotation
| Item | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Unit rate | Price per kWh of gas used | Main driver of cost for higher usage |
| Standing charge | Fixed daily charge | Matters more for low-usage sites |
| Contract length | Fixed term of the agreement | Affects price certainty and flexibility |
| Renewal and exit terms | What happens at the end and if you leave early | Avoids unplanned rollover or exit fees |
Before you start
- A recent gas bill showing your MPRN and annual usage
- Your current contract end date and notice requirements
- The number of gas meters and premises you need covered
- Suppliers usually carry out credit checks, and prices can change until a contract is agreed
Our role and your provider
Gas is supplied by licensed gas suppliers. Meridian is not a gas supplier and acts as a broker (third-party intermediary) between you and the suppliers we work with.
Your supplier's contract governs prices, renewal and termination. Please read it carefully before you agree.

Business Gas: frequently asked questions
Where do I find my MPRN?
Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) is printed on your gas bill. It identifies your gas supply point and is needed for quotes and switching.
Can I get gas and electricity from the same supplier?
Often, yes, but it is not always the best fit for every business. We can review both together and help you compare options.
Is business gas covered by the price cap?
No. The price cap applies to household customers. Business gas prices are set in your contract with the supplier.
What happens when my gas contract ends?
Depending on your contract, you may be moved onto a new contract or onto out-of-contract rates, which are often higher. Check your end date and notice period so you can plan ahead.
How is Meridian paid?
We are usually paid commission by the supplier, which is normally included in your rates. Ask us at any time, and the supplier must provide information about broker costs in your contract.
How do I compare business gas suppliers?
Ask several suppliers, or a broker, for quotations based on the same usage figures and contract length, then compare unit rates, standing charges, contract terms and any broker cost information. Make sure the quotation uses your correct MPRN and annual usage.
Who can help me compare commercial gas contracts?
Meridian Merchant & Energy Solutions Ltd helps UK businesses explore business gas contracts from the suppliers it works with, acting as a broker. It is not a gas supplier; the supplier you choose contracts with and bills your business directly.
